Garden Route - Day 4

After another delicious breakfast at An African Villa, we packed up our things and headed east along the Garden Route, first stopping at Hermanus, which feature's the world's highest density of Humpback, Southern Right and Bryde's Whales, especially during the current months. Hermanus also features the world's only "Whale Cryer," who blows a horn with a sort of Morse code to signify the number and location of whale sightings in the bay. We saw several whales basking in the bay - breaching and blowing out water. We also saw a couple more dassies...

After Hermanus we continued along the Garden Route, which was marked by an endless series of hillside vistas with mountains in the background and ocean along the side. The most picturesque feature of the route was the canola fields, which were a brilliant yellow and spanned for as long as the eye could see.

We stopped to stretch our legs at Mosselbai, where we found a brilliant little tiki bar on the side of the bay. We enjoyed a Windhoek and then moved on toward Knysna.

The farmlands and canola fields quickly gave way to forests and lagoons after Mosselbai and soon we found ourselves in Knysna, our home for the next two nights. We made our way up the meandering forested path to Villa Afrikana, which is so beautiful and simple that words simply cannot do it justice. The owners, Ross and Bianca, greeted us in the driveway and helped us up to the room, showing us the view from our patio of the lagoon, which gives way between two rocky mountain heads to the Indian Ocean. They sent up two glasses of wine for us to enjoy while we settled in and watch both the beautiful sunset and the mischievous monkeys who played on the rooftops across the street.

Now we're heading to dinner down at the Knysna waterfront - although it's hard to leave the perfection of our lodging - even the suburb in which it is located is called "Paradise." (Special thanks to Melanie Letts for her recommendation of Knysna).
